Hello
Welcome to Birch + Ink Communications. I’m Michaela — writer, editor and founder of this small but mighty studio dedicated to helping non-profits, rural organizations and community groups tell their stories with clarity and confidence. Whether you need finely crafted communications materials or a well-researched, thoughtfully prepared grant application, I’m here to make the process easier, clearer and more strategic for your team.
I’m so glad you’re here. Reach out anytime — I’d love to chat.
My Story
I’ve known I was meant to be a writer since the third grade. What started as filling notebooks with stories eventually grew into a career spent helping people and organizations communicate clearly, confidently and with purpose.

I began my professional writing journey in local journalism, working as a reporter and editor for community newspapers — work I absolutely loved. Those years shaped my understanding of what strong communication can do: inform, connect and empower the people who keep a community running. Journalism also taught me how to research thoroughly, write with clarity, meet tight deadlines and capture the heart of a story — skills that now form the backbone of Birch + Ink Communications.

From there, I expanded into magazine editing, spending several years as the assistant editor for a hunting and fishing publication. That role deepened my connection to rural culture, outdoor recreation and the communities that make up so much of Alberta and British Columbia. I learned how passionate, knowledgeable and resourceful rural organizations truly are — and how often they need clear, accessible, and persuasive communication to share their impact.

Today, Birch + Ink brings all of that experience together.
My work is grounded in three beliefs:

1. Stories matter.
Every organization — large or small — has a meaningful story behind the work they do. I love helping people find that story and shape it into something powerful.

2. Clear information builds trust.
Accurate, well-presented writing helps communities understand your mission, your needs and your goals.

3. Rural and community organizations deserve strong support.
I care deeply about helping rural groups grow and thrive, whether through strategic grant applications, polished communications or helping bring clarity to complex information.

Birch + Ink exists to support the organizations that make our communities better — museums, tourism groups, environmental and outdoor organizations, arts and culture groups and local non-profits working on the ground every day. If I can help your team secure funding, strengthen your message or tell your story more effectively, I would be honoured to be part of that journey.
